I did this painting from a photo I took of my son a few weeks ago. What I learned:
- 6 x 6 inches is tiny when it comes to painting figures
- Painting using a photo reference is way different than painting from life
- I am more comfortable painting from life
- It is good to go outside your comfort zone
Hi Tammy,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting my blog, and I'm so glad to see yours. I am such a fan of thick juicy paint, so I am thrilled to see your paintings and I am looking forward to following your blog!
Photo reference is definitely a world of its own. Since I work from photos a lot, I invested in a larger monitor and work from that. If it is placed back from the easel, you can still get the sense of the scene (with lots of squinting) I call it painting "en plein monitor". Its easy to lose the sense of spontaneity when using photos as well, so one has to work hard at that.
ReplyDeleteI like the composition of this picture. And yes 6 x 6 is a small size!
Thanks Catherine. I am happy with the composition in this one, and there are parts that I am pleased with and parts I struggled on. I think I will try some more using photos. Using a monitor is a great idea - I will give that a try.
