The Ringbearer

I did this painting from a photo I took of my son a few weeks ago. What I learned:
- 6 x 6 inches is tiny when it comes to painting figures
- Painting using a photo reference is way different than painting from life
- I am more comfortable painting from life
- It is good to go outside your comfort zone

  1. Hi Tammy,
Thank you so much for visiting my blog, and I'm so glad to see yours. I am such a fan of thick juicy paint, so I am thrilled to see your paintings and I am looking forward to following your blog!

  2. Photo reference is definitely a world of its own. Since I work from photos a lot, I invested in a larger monitor and work from that. If it is placed back from the easel, you can still get the sense of the scene (with lots of squinting) I call it painting "en plein monitor". Its easy to lose the sense of spontaneity when using photos as well, so one has to work hard at that.
I like the composition of this picture. And yes 6 x 6 is a small size!

  3. Thanks Catherine. I am happy with the composition in this one, and there are parts that I am pleased with and parts I struggled on. I think I will try some more using photos. Using a monitor is a great idea - I will give that a try.
